Destination Engagement Session: Dallas & Houston

Katie & Mike's candid, classic, and romantic destination engagement pictures

These love birds chose David Baker Wedding Photography because they saw pictures of both posed and candid pictures, and they preferred candid and some formal posed engagement and wedding pictures and they wanted classic and romantic moments created. They wanted to get pictures with their fur-baby, Shimas (cute English Bulldog). They both share the aesthetic preferences for moody and art deco styles. They also wanted a classic and romantic session outside in a beautiful tree-lined luxurious area. How may I serve this couple? Two portion engagement session in two different metropolitan cities!

Candid vs Classic:

Candid is when the couple does their own thing and I may give suggestions here and there as activities the couple can do. Classic (posed) is not purely posed. I don’t know about you…but when I hear the word “pose“, I imagine Napoleon Dynamite or some super cheesy and stiff 1980’s or 1990’s family portrait. When I photograph couples. I make it my goal to pose my couple in a way that when you look at your pictures, your pictures are alive with natural interaction between the couple. I may pose the couple, but I bring out their personalities, so your pictures don’t look “posed“ while in that pose or shape.

Portion 1 - Dallas:

Katie & Mike's engagement session started in Highland Park, Dallas. I photographed them while we hanged-out and candidly talked inside of a 1930's pub. Here, I documented purely candid moments with few direction - enough to say “here. let’s try this“. They are that "candid couple". I’ve learned some couples are able to do purely candid session, some excel with a combination of Classic & Candid, and others prefer posing direction, so they look their best - they would prefer to have a peace-of-mind experience.

I created pictures showing them enjoying themselves with each other. Funny enough...this was considered the "Formal Outfit Session" although they definitely break the mold of the typical "Formal..." session because they were photographed madly kissing each other and playing with each other intimately. It was a joy to see two souls who found each other who share each others passionate love. It was wonderful!

Portion 2 - Houston:

Katie & Mike also knew they wanted classic and romantic moments created to show their love in a more formal manner. The ironic thing about the second portion??? The second portion was actually considered the "Casual Outfit Session". Katie & Mike are amazing, confident, self-aware, and comfortable in their own skin type people who are so natural with each other and in front of the camera. For their Classic and Romantic portion. I suggested West U. and River Oaks area because I love the trees and this general area. I knew with their unique personality’s and their clothing styles (similar to Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, J. Crew, Banana Republic), Katie & Mike would both be right at home at this location, their moments would align effortlessly in this location with their unique styles.

This session involved more direction on my part to the couple. I am experienced in formal posing, and I still bring out the interaction in the couple, so their pictures appear natural and candid even when "posed".
